The Top TV Butlers of All Time

The Butler may not sound like the most exciting role on TV, but there have been some great TV butlers. They may have been (or still are) only sidekicks to the main protagonist – but I love everything about them!

7. Geoffrey Butler (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air)
What would the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (AKA Will Smith) have done without the show’s butler Geoffrey or "G" as he called him? Not only is Geoffrey a great butler to the Banks family; keeping Wills and Carlton on track - but his brand of sarcasm and his delivery of some of the best one-liners in the show is a real comic treat for the audience.

6. Aloysius Parker (Thunderbirds)
Nicknamed Nosey, Aloysius Parker is both butler and chauffeur to Lady Penelope. Previously a criminal, Parker supports the Thunderbirds by using his old criminal contacts to track down leads and continually help save the world from megalomaniacal villains.

5. Max (Hart to Hart)
Max cooked, served food and chauffeured, but as if that wasn’t enough he also helped the Harts solve millions of cases and constantly helped them to escape the perils that only primetime TV can throw at its protagonists.

4. Duckworth (Ducktales)
Our list of favourite butlers just wouldn’t be right without the inclusion of Duckworth the butler in the cartoon show Ducktales. Scrooge McDuck may be the protagonist but he just wouldn’t be the same character without his butler.

3. Cato (Pink Panther)
Bert Kwouk provided Pink Panther fans with some glorious moments as Inspector Clouseau’s (Peter Sellers) TV sidekick and butler Cato. Not only did he perform his normal butler duties impeccably, but he also had the job of testing Clouseau’s self-defence skills by hiding and then jumping out and attacking him frequently and at inopportune moments – scenes I could happily watch again and again.

2. Lurch (The Addams Family)
The Addams Family butler was originally created by American cartoonist Charles Addams before Ted Cassidy played the TV role. Since then Lurch has appeared in the Addams family films and even an episode of Scooby Doo. Famous for his catchphrase “You rang” the hugely intimidating figure was arguably the nicest of the Addams family. Check out the review.

1. Alfred Pennyworth (Batman)
Alfred Pennyworth, butler to none other than the Cape Crusader of Gotham City, has been played by personal favourite Sir Michael Caine, Ian Abercrombie, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Michael Gough and Alan Napier. Originally just a butler in the comic, the modern day film version also became the young Batman’s legal guardian after Batman’s parents died. His role of butler goes way above the usual stereotype and his often sage like advice helps Batman to make many a right decision.

This is a great list isn’t it? Want to know more? How about we look at another few? Well I recently came across a fantastic infographic from Butlers Bingo. Why not check it out here.
