10 Video Game TV Shows Adaptations Coming Out Soon
For video game nerds, it’s incredibly hard to think of a video game franchise that’s had an adaptation to the big screen that hasn’t sucked. In recent years, the film adaptations have been received a lot better - films like Mortal Kombat and Sonic The Hedgehog got some praise from the fans.
In 2020, the video game industry overtook both the movie industry and music industry combined. Video games are both much more accessible but also have the added interest garnered from the competitive side of things. Games like CS:GO draw in crowds of hundreds of thousands of spectators from all over the world. Even betting on CS:GO at sites like CSGOLuck.com draws huge interest, allowing players to stream the matches on Twitch.tv, whilst they play.
Whilst the big screen hasn’t been doing too well for video game movies, streaming services have been thriving - especially with TV show versions of popular games. Netflix has been doing particularly well with its adaptations, with series such as Dragon’s Dogma, Castlevania and smash hit The Witcher all becoming popular shows and spawning multiple seasons.
Thanks to the popularity of these shows, Netflix has lined up plenty more video game related and adapted series. Most of these are in the early stages of production, so it’s quite hard to get major details - series such as Diablo, Fallout and Cyberpunk 2077. Here’s the information we do have about upcoming video games though - check to see if any of your favourites are on the list.
Castlevania Spin Off Series
With the series technically coming to a nice conclusion at the end of the fourth series, if you’re a fan you may be surprised to know Netflix is actually planning to release a spin-off. This spin off series will be set within the French Revolution starring Richter Belmont, a relation to Sypha and Trevor from the original series. He will be accompanied on his monster hunting adventures by none other than Maria Renard, who is a favourite from the series.
Whilst fans have been crying out for a new game, a TV series will have to tide them over in the meantime. With a dark and grimy aesthetic, we have no doubt that the infamous bright green goggles will be making their appearance. The series is in very capable hands, as it’s going to be written by the creator of John Wick (here’s hoping nothing happens to Sam Fisher's dog!)
The Cuphead Show!
Known for it’s absolutely brutal difficulty and unique style, Cuphead became an instant hit thanks to these two attributes. The beautiful retro animation style is back again, and Netflix has announced a TV series which again fully embraces the 1930’s style of cartoon animation. The titular twins Cuphead and Mugman are of course included and no doubt King Dice will have the pair up to no good.
With the video game series being well known for having some of the best villains in any video game - simply mention Vaas to any Far Cry fan - the rumour mill is abuzz for the new series. Whilst not too much is known about the series, it is known that it will be an anime and a pair of series. There’s speculation one of the series will be based on the popular 80’s themed Far Cry 3 expansion Blood Dragon.
League of Legends: Arcane
One of the biggest MOBA (or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games around, Riot Games’ League Of Legends is a huge franchise so there is a big burden on this series to be good. Having suffered from various delays, the animated series covers the backstory of one of the most popular characters in League of Legends, Jinx.
The Last Of Us
The post-apocalyptic series that's exclusive to Playstation is getting a release on HBO and looks stronger and stronger with each cast announcement. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey have been announced as the two main characters from the series - Joel and Ellie - as well as having Merle Dandridge voicing Marlene, a prominent character from the game. Whilst other details are scant, this is lining up to be an absolute blockbuster of a series.
With the latest title in the series set to release very soon, the hype for the Halo series adaptation is only set to get bigger and bigger. The now iconic spartan armour with this green plating and gold visor will be worn by Pablo Schreiber and after a bit of a battle between who would broadcast the series, Paramount+is the latest studio on the street to manage to get the rights to show this highly anticipated adaptation.
Tomb RaiderHaving been rebooted for the big screen in 2018, Alicia Vikander will be adventuring as Lara Croft once again in a movie sequel. But there will also be an anime series released on Netflix, Taking on from the Tomb Raider games rather than the movies. Screenwriter for The Witcher Tasha Huo has been tasked with producing and scripting the show, so Croft is in very capable hands!
Whilst few may remember this Playstation 2 era car combat game, to say a few people were surprised when a Twisted Metal series was announced would be an understatement. Partly produced by Will Arnett (Star of award winning comedy series Arrested Development), this show is set to be more in the vein of an action comedy than white knuckle car combat. The two writers of the Deadpool films are also onboard as the proverbial cherry on top of an already strange yet awesome sounding cake!
Whilst the 2016 Assassins Creed film didn’t manage to cause a huge stir in the charts, even with a-list actor Michael Fassbender as the protagonist and a $125 million budget, Netflix are hoping to correct this with a live-action series. Whilst any details of this series are being held by extremely tight lips, the creator of Netflix's Vikings and Vikings Valhalla has been announced as the show-runner, so if those shows are anything to go by we could be looking at a brilliant series.
