Stone: The Complete First Season
Jonny Lee Miller stars as Eli Stone, a sharp, ruthless San Francisco legal eagle who describes the folks he works with as, "the guys who beat up their parpalegics and their wives when we're not busy making sure Satan gets a break on his taxes." Eli suddenly begins having wild visions starting with George Michael doing his thing on his living room table (the singing thing, not the - uh - never mind). These desperate visions escalate into all out trench warfare, elaborate gospel numbers, and a world of other bizarre scenarios. Are they divinely inspired inspirations? Whatever it is, Eli decides to devote his life to helping people in dire circumstances and his corporate partners are none too happy about it. His accupuncturist thinks he's a prophet, his business associates think he's nuts, his fiance doesn't know what to think. The tone of the series is lighthearted and beguilingly spiritual, I would compare it to Brothers and Sisters in its overall feel. Loretta Devine as Eli's exasperated secretary is way wonderful and a terrific singer; Natasha Henstridge as his fiance who becomes an undesirable co-worker generates a bright spark; and ambrosial Katey Sagal joins the cast towards the end of the season as Eli's relentless, ball busting adversary. On the other hand, the pro bono causes Eli takes on too often suffer from the cutes (gay chimps?) while the random short plunks of disparate notes that nearly every dramedy utilizes for music cues acts as a not so subtle laugh track. Upbeat, quirky and curious, Eli Stone has the power to warm the heart and amaze despite a slightly blurry focus, and it gets better as the episodes roll along. It took me a while to get in the groove (as it did with Brothers and Sisters, come to think of it) but there are more than enough pleasing moments to make Eli Stone on DVD a winner. Bonus features inclued deleted scenes, extended pilot with commentary,
and some behind the scenes mini-documentaries.
