We deeply regret the loss of one of the greatest visual artists of all time - Alex Toth passed away Saturday morning, May 27th, 2006. Alex Toth designed the great action characters for Hanna-Barbera in the Sixties and Seventies. Space Ghost, Josie and the Pussycats, The Herculoids, and the Super Friends are just a few of his design creations. During the early Sixties, Alex Toth drew the classic Dell television show comic book adaptations that millions of kids grew up with. This is an exerpt from Twenty
Questions with Alex Toth from our comic book section. You'll read
the artist's comments here in his own handwriting.

"I
became aware that animators couldn't 'read' a drawing in front of them.
I was amazed. Not only could they not draw, but they couldn't read a drawing.
I realized I had to explain the drawings - my model sheets were covered
with footnotes - because whatever is done in creating models for production
art has to be aimed down to the lowest common denominator, the people
who can't draw or won't. Yet these "artists" who can't draw have been
at it for 20 and 30 years, drawing cartoons." Sixties Dell Comics / Dell Television Comics / Alex Toth's Animation Work |
