35 YEAR VETS
Richard Tolleson adds about daytime TV: I'm embarrased to pop in with another response, but I have an answer to your question about cast members on soaps. There are a few As The World Turns cast members who have been on for more than 35 years.

Helen Wagner has played Nancy Hughes since 1956

Don Hastings has played Bob Hughes since 1960

Eileen Fulton has played Lisa Grimaldi since 1960

Marie Masters has played Susan Stewart since 1968

Kathryn Hays has played Kim Hughes since 1972

TPIR AGAIN
Richard Tolleson responds to my previous remarks about The Price Is Right: "I just wanted to add a comment regarding the shows that have been around for 35 years and would still be recognizable.
Don't forget:
Meet the Press
Today
Days of Our Lives
As the World Turns
Guiding Light
All My Children
One Life to Live
General Hospital
CBS Evening News
NBC Nightly News

"(Would they be recognizable? Faces have changed on all of the above, but the formats are basically the same as they were the week TPIR premiered.)

"btw, I was in grade school that week. I used to play sick whenever a new daytime show of any genre premiered. I, too, recorded audio of many of those shows, but unfortunately didn't keep the tapes. Thanks for the memories!"

It's true, I should have put Today Show and Meet The Press on the list. But I doubt a viewer of the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite would recognize the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Technologically speaking the nightly news shows would be virtually unrecognizable to someone from 35 years ago.

When looking at a 1972 era soap opera and comparing it to today's fare the difference is shocking. For one thing it's all about young people today where as before it was all middle aged couples.

60 Minutes and The Price Is Right, on the other hand, still maintain the exact same format and graphic identity. Only the faces have changed and both - at least right now - have an original cast member (Bob Barker & Mike Wallace). Come to think of it, maybe Janice Pennington should host TPIR.

Here's my question - are there any current soap operas that have cast members from 35 years ago?

TV NOTES
FX is renewing Dirt and The Riches. ABC Family axed Falcon Beach and Sons of Hollywood.

VIEWERS CAN LAUGH 'N' SNIFF THEIR WAY THROUGH THIS SUPER-SIZED EPISODE VIA UNIQUE INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE - A special 'scented' insert card will be available on newsstands and to subscribers of TV Guide for viewers who want to "Laugh 'n' Sniff" their way through this episode of My Name Is Earl on Thursday, May 3rd. Play along and get a whiff of the action along with Earl (Jason Lee) and his cohorts.

She jumped The View's ratings 18% with women viewers last year so it's no surprise that Rosie O'Donnell will likely host a new syndicated talk show. Telepictures, her former employer, is rumored to have a deal pending.

She'll be entering a tough environment - overall household ratings for the daytime talk shows this season so far don't look good for Maury, Jerry and Montel. Could it be that the exploitational talk show era is passing? Finally?

Oprah: 6.6 (- 7), Dr. Phil: 5.0 (- 4), Live With Regis & Kelly: 3.4 (- 3), Maury: 2.3 (-18), Ellen DeGeneres: 2.2 (- 8), Rachael Ray: 2.2, Jerry Springer: 1.7 (-15), Montel: 1.7 (-19), Tyra Banks: 1.4 (-13), Martha: 1.4 (-18), Dr. Keith: 1.0, Greg Behrendt: 0.8, Megan Mullally: 0.8.

Tyra and Martha aren't looking too good either. I've actually enjoyed Tyra Bank's show the few times I've caught it and have to admit Rachael Ray is growing on me - in the sense that I can leave it on for 5 or 10 minutes if I'm in the kitchen. She seems to be the strongest contender, a solid hit for a freshman show.

TVGuide.com’s Michael Ausiello has learned that Polly Bergen (Cape Fear, Commander in Chief) has been cast to play the saucy mother of Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), while M*A*S*H alum Mike Farrell has been tapped to play Gabrielle Solis’ (Eva Longoria) soon-to-be father-in-law on Desperate Housewives.

Paul M. writes with his thoughts on Bob Barker's replacement: "I just wanted to put in my 2 cents in on The Price Is Right look for a new host. I don't even watch the show anymore, but I was thinking of what the show is trying to appeal to and what they need to recover a possible fallout of viewers when Bob Barker retires.

"I feel that the best replacement would be former Entertainment Tonight host and game show veteran, Bob Goen. The problem is that he left ET to spend more time with his family, but then a show like Price Is Right would be more suited for a family man. What has happened to Bob Goen since he left ET a few years ago?"

Hey Paul - I'll bet TPIR pays better than ET!

Kevin S. Butler adds: "I'm not too fond of the idea of John O'Hurley taking over a classic TV game show after watching him ruin the recent revival of another Mark Goodson classic, To Tell The Truth. I shudder at the thought, he will ruin the show and as I predicted before The Price Is Right will definitely go off the air after 35 years."

The reason I'm fascinated with the story is that TPIR and 60 Minutes are the only shows on television that have lasted 35 years and would be still recognizable to someone from back then. I turned on a few minutes of The Price is Right while I was fixing lunch today. No question, retirement is the right thing for Bob Barker.

I couldn't help but think that there will only be a few more months when I can turn on the TV and see Bob Barker. I tuned in for the very first broadcast in 1972 (and I taped the theme song on a cassette recorder that first week) and I've caught the show dozens of times over the years, mostly if I was eating lunch at home at the 11:00 hour. It truly is the end of a TV era.

By the way, TPIR comes to DVD this summer. Until then, enjoy these You Tube videos:

RATINGS TROUBLE
From USA TODAY: In the past few weeks, a raft of top shows on all major networks have hit record lows: Lost, Desperate Housewives, ER, My Name Is Earl, The Simpsons, Two and a Half Men, CSI: Miami and, just Monday, Heroes. Still others, such as 24, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and American Idol, had their worst ratings in two years or more.

TPIR
TMZ is reporting that the hunt for Bob Barker's replacement on The Price Is Right goes on - it looked for a while like it was down to George Hamilton and John O'Hurley, Mr. Peterson from Seinfeld. It was reported that O'Hurley blew the producers away but he didn't want the gig that badly - now O'Hurley's reps are saying he would love the job but never auditioned!

What all this means is anyone's guess - could desperation be setting in over at CBS? If you ask me (and someone should some day) the show will have to be completely overhauled when the new host takes over. Same games but a whole new look.

Speaking of classic game shows, this news comes from The Open Press:

More than 250 classic and newly produced game shows will be added to the Game Show TV4U.Com free internet television broadband channel that is a part of the 28 channel broadband network TV4U.Com.

Iconic game shows like $64,000 Question, Break the Bank, Beat The Clock, 21, What's My Line, You Bet Your Life, Do You Trust Your Wife, Queen For a Day, Concentration, Face is Familiar, Mike Stokey's Pantomime Quiz, PDQ, People are Funny, Play Your Hunch, I've Got a Secret, Price is Right, and Truth or Consequences have already been added to the channel.

Coming soon are Super Pay Cards, Bride and Groom, Dollar a Second, Treasure Hunt, Place the Face, Two For the Money, Strike it Rich, Make Me Laugh, Joker's Wild, Chance of a Lifetime, Tic Tac Dough, Stop The Music, Name That Tune, High Rollers, and many more.

TO BEA OR NOT TO BE
melba mooreEavesdrop on 1979 with this commercial break and a bit from The Beatrice Arthur Special, possibly the gayest show of the 1970s. This was Arthur's first big production after Maude left the air and it was, if I recall correctly, the lowest rated TV special of the year, a huge bomb.

Why was it the gayest show? Look at the guests - Rock Hudson (he and Bea Arthur sing about the virtues Amyl Nitrate), Wayland Flowers & Madame, along with Melba Moore singing the disco hit 'Miss Thing.'

THE LATEST
I get a lot of news reports each day from every aspect of entertainment. I'm going to start sharing some of them with you.

DVD News:
BCI has a number of interesting releases coming up that you may want to know about. Don't pay attention to the suggested retail price, you can get these DVDs for a lot less if you order online. From the press releases:
On June 5, 2007, BCI is proud to release for the first time on DVD the groundbreaking movies Bill and Bill: On His Own in one beautifully packaged set. Starring Mickey Rooney (Night at Museum), who won both an Emmy and Golden Globe for his performance, Bill and its sequel Bill On His Own, follow the life of a mentally challenged man fighting the odds to live life to the fullest in a sometimes cold world. These two TV movies were highly rated in the ‘80s and feature future stars Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt as Bill’s friends and caretakers. The 2-movie set has an SRP of $12.98.

This is a fantastic series I enjoyed very much while living in London: THE BILL Series Onegoes on duty June 5th. BCI and FremantleMedia Enterprises are proud to announce the DVD release of Series One of The Bill, the longest running and most successful police drama program on British television. The complete first season of this award-winning series will be released under the International Voyage brand and will be available on a four-DVD set for an SRP of $34.98.

On May 8, 2007, join rocker Rick Springfield as he takes you on a magical mystery tour back to the ‘70s. Mission: Magic! is the colorful Saturday morning kids’ show that introduced cuddly Aussie Springfield to an American audience and made him into a teen idol. This Peter Max-inspired series is sure to be treasured by those who experienced the “Me decade” or anyone who wonders what it was like. Remastered for ultimate psychedelic pleasure, Mission: Magic! contains 16 episodes of wild retro fun. This 2 disc set has an srp of $24.98.

On May 22, 2007, join BCI's Ink and Paint as they give you an old school lesson in heroics and super duper entertainment as Hero High: The Complete Series comes to DVD. This wild animated series from the ‘80s seems to have been an influence on such recent theatrical flicks as Sky High and The Incredibles. Kids today will immediately be drawn to the recognizable superhero archetypes being spoofed, and those who grew up on the show will delight in reliving those days of Dr. Denton’s and Capt’n Crunch in front of the TV. All 26 dynamic episodes have been remastered (with extra features) for Hero High: The Complete Series and packed into a bulging box set. The 2-disc set has an SRP of $24.98.

In Theaters:
This sounds cool, the release date is May 4th, 2007 in NY (May 18th in LA, other cities to follow). In PARIS, JE T’AIME, celebrated directors from around the world, including the Coen Brothers, Gus Van Sant, Gurinder Chadha, Wes Craven, Walter Salles, Alexander Payne and Olivier Assayas, have come together to portray Paris in a way never before imagined. Made by a team of contributors as cosmopolitan as the city itself, this portrait of the city is as diverse as its creators' backgrounds and nationalities. With each director telling the story of an unusual encounter in one of the city's neighborhoods, the vignettes go beyond the 'postcard' view of Paris to portray aspects of the city rarely seen on the big screen.

An outstanding host of actors including Natalie Portman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Fanny Ardant, Elijah Wood, Nick Nolte, Bob Hoskins, Juliette Binoche, Emily Mortimer, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Rufus Sewell, Barbet Schroeder, Ludivine Sagnier, Gena Rowlands, Miranda Richardson and Steve Buscemi, grace these vignettes with their larger-than-life personas. Their performances add even deeper resonance to this affectionate love letter to one of the world's most transcendent cities.

Contest:
Deep Focus and HBO/Comcast bring you The Sopranos Ultimate Hits. An interactive scavenger hunt that tests fans' knowledge of HBO’s hit original series, The Sopranos. The game challenges users to race against the clock and rummage through a city dump for metaphoric clues that relate back to infamous hits from the series. Players have to find and properly identify clues that represent the killer, weapon, location and victim from 8 memorable "hits".

Users also get more than bragging rights by entering to win the Ultimate Hits scavenger sweepstakes and a chance to win $5,000.

Check it out here and try to win $5,000 too!
