Holy Sophomore The most significant pop culture explosion in a decade that became synonymous with cultural upheavals would have to be the Batman TV series, debuting in January 1966. This quirky, colorful program shot to the top of the ratings as Bat-Mania spread like influenza, everywhere you looked, on every conceivable product, one would find the Batman logo. Pow Bam Biff! The series made Camp cool, a show adults and kids could enjoy and yet take away an entirely different perspective on what they just watched. Genius. The first season of Batman is a delight because it was so fresh, so different than anything that came before. With the exception of King Tut and Egghead (and they were made great by the actors) producer William Dozier and his writers had a knack for creating the lamest villains - Chandell, Minstrel, Siren, Clock King, Shame - as opposed to time honored bad guys who came over from the comic books: Riddler, Joker, Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Catwoman. The first 1/2 of the second season of Batman is now available on DVD and it begins with another weak Dozier villain, Archer played by Art Carney, but is quickly redeemed by a 2-parter with Julie Newmar as Catwoman, the show's most popular character. Year two was when Batman ventured from Camp to just plain silly. That's not to say bad... how could it be with 2 strong Catwoman storylines, Shelley Winters as Ma Parker, Victor Buono in another tour-de-farce as King Tut. Other standouts: Cesar Romero as The Impractical Joker, Burgess Meredith in The Penguin's Nest, Carolyn Jones as Marsha Queen of Diamonds or Vincent Price thrilling overacting as Egghead? I can easily see how many veiwers might prefer the first half of season 2 above all others,it certainly thrilled me as a youngster. It's a slicker show than year one and packed with cameos. It was after the episodes in this collection that ratings cratered, leading to a stripped down third season with few highlights. If you want the commentaries you'll have to purchase the total package, if you can afford it I suggest you do... it will make these second season episodes a great deal more interesting. Looks like it's Batmania all over again! |
