Man from U.N.C.L.E. Season One
by Billy Ingram

Man From UNCLE on DVDWhen will Hollywood stop making bad movies based on TV shows? No time soon I'm sure. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is up on the big screen next but it's doubtful it will match the quality of the first season of what I call the best hour long adventure series of the 1960s.

Man from U.N.C.L.E. is a kinda sorta spinoff of the James Bond films, Napoleon Solo was created by Ian Fleming as a TV version of Bond. It follows the adventures of an American and Russian born super spies as they battle the evil forces of T.H.R.U.S.H. who is heating up the cold war all around the world.

The first season of U.N.C.L.E., rereleased on DVD & Blu-Ray, contains most of the best episodes of the four season run. Beginning in season 2 a more campy approach was taken to cash in on the Batman craze of 1966. It's also the only year the show was broadcast in black and white (although the pilot and The Double Affair were filmed in color they are curiously presented here in B&W).

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was a genuine pop culture phenom with hundreds of tie-ins from toys to games to novels. From the product description: In this hit spoof of the spy genre, actors Robert Vaughn and David McCallum play the roles of top agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin who use their charm, wit, and a never-ending assortment of gadgets to defend the world from evil, chaos and bad taste. From trying to save the world from fear gas to trying to save themselves from a pack of bloodthirsty cheetahs, these serious spies bring the suspense and fun to life.

This DVD collection contains 29 one hour episodes, the quintessential sixties spy drama, rollicking retro action at it's best with a careful blending of humor and adventure. One episode even features William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy together pre-Star Trek.

For the most part the image sparkles thanks to restoration, episodes look better than when they were first presented. If you buy just one season of Man from U.N.C.L.E. this is the one to get!
