& Shirley - The Third Season
Laverne & Shirley was the massively successful spin-off of mega-hit Happy Days, at the time the episodes on this new DVD set aired (1977-78) Laverne & Shirley was the top show in the nation, followed closely by Happy Days. Basically the program centers on the lightweight, slapstick misadventures of a couple of young brewery workers who manage, in season 3 alone, to commandeer an aircraft, get tossed around a wrestling ring, take in a race horse, become lady cops... you get the idea. The humor is tame and obvious as was the style of the day; slapstick comedy all the way, broader than Lucy even. It certainly won't tax your brain - your patience, maybe. Although set in the early sixties, the show's sensibilities are rooted firmly in the 1970s, a trait the show shares with its parent. For my money, Laverne & Shirley works better than Happy Days, if only because of the more frenetic pace, the exaggerated performances, and the lead and supporting actor's charms - especially Michael McKean and David L. Lander as Lenny and Squiggy, who took their nutty neighbor roles (by then a tiresome requirement for every 1970's sitcom) to a refreshing new level. The picture quality is sharp and colorful, like brand new really, these episodes have been marvelously remastered. There are no bonus features with this one, just all 24 episodes at a reasonably low price. It gives me a warm feeling watching shows like this; Laverne & Shirley was one of the last of the great, old-fashioned type sitcoms, they don't make them like this anymore. Plot Outline: The misadventures of two single women in the 1950's and '60's. Plot Synopsis: Best friends and roommates Laverne De Fazio and Shirley Feeney are single, working girls in late 1950s Milwaukee (later early 1960s Los Angeles) coping with dates, neighbours, and each other. Product Description: Mork was a misfit on his own planet because his sense of humor (he was heard to call the Orkan leader, Orson, "cosmic breath"). So the humorless Orkans sent him off to study Earthlings, whose "crazy" customs they had never been able to understand. Mork landed, in a giant eggshell near Boulder, Colorado. There he was befriended by pretty Mindy McConnell, a clerk at the music store run by her father, Frederick. Mork looked human, but his strange mixture of Orkan and Earthling customs--such as wearing a suit, but putting it on backwards, or sitting in a chair, but upside down--led most people to think of him as just as some kind of nut. Mindy knew where he came from, and helped him adjust to Earth's strange ways. She also let him stay in the attic of her apartment house, which scandalized her conservative father, but not her swinging grandmother, Cora. Studio: Paramount Home Video
