Craig Ferguson: A Wee Bit of Revolution
Craig Ferguson performs to a sold out Boston crowd in his first stand up special bringing a side to him audiences may not expect.
Story
Performed at the Wilbur Theater in Boston, MA; the late night talk show host brings his own unique style to the stage. Fans who know Ferguson from his talk show will be surprised however as Ferguson covers a wide range of topics from meeting (then) President Bush, his own battles with addiction, moving to America, getting married and much more.
Good and the Bad
Ferguson gets the crowd warmed up by spending the first few minutes of his show satirically ripping on the theater that he is performing in. From here what follows is over an hour of the Scottish born comic ripping on just about everyone and everything that he can from political figures to celebrities. No one will be safe from the surprisingly still physical Ferguson as he blasts through pretense and delivers his straight truth.
Once upon a time, this DVD came in my mailbox and there was an intention to share this release with friends. Within minutes of hitting play however, this intention disappeared completely. That isn’t to say that the special is bad or isn’t funny; in fact I’ll say right now that it is very funny. Ferguson’s comedy however is not going to be for everyone. Fans who know him best as the late night talk show host or the evil (and perverted) Nigel Wick from the Drew Carey Show are going to find themselves faced with an onslaught of humor that goes beyond blue.
No topics are off bounds for the comic who starts early with President Bush but soon aims squarely at himself talking about his experiences with alcohol and hard drugs. Naturally comfort levels are going to be determined by your own tastes, while I was personally fine with Ferguson talking about his time in rehab and lording his alcoholism over heroine junkies there are others out there who will shy away from this. If that weren’t enough to push your boundaries, it’s only fair to warn you that Ferguson desperately needs you to know how large his penis is (I’m not speaking figuratively).
Even when he’s pushing boundaries however, Ferguson will get some great one liners in during the show. When talking about marrying his current wife, Ferguson says “There were fights between the Scottish family and the Jewish family over who got to pay for the wedding,” this could have been the funniest line from the entire show if it hadn’t been for Ferguson congratulating himself for the line almost right after saying it.
One of the more interesting aspects to Ferguson’s show is his views on patriotism as an immigrant. Having only been a citizen for less than a year at the time of the show, Ferguson has unique views about his adopted country. While his words are much more colorful, Ferguson talks about his love for the country in a way that many Americans might take for granted. As he states himself proudly during his routine; ‘The US didn’t ask me to become a citizen, I did.’
Extras
Two extras are included on this feature; in the first extra Craig Ferguson sits down for a sixteen minute interview. Recorded on July 4th, 2008 Ferguson talks about his patriotism for the US and his views of the country from the inside. The interview is really interesting but just because it’s an interview doesn’t mean that Ferguson plans to clean up his speech. The sixteen minutes will be filled with choice words for television personalities who grandstand their political positions and those who work in the TSA. At around the halfway point, the questions start to move towards Ferguson’s personal life going into his professional beginnings and where he is now.
The second extra to be featured is a speech that Ferguson gave to Faneuil Hall in Boston on July 4th 2008. Keeping with the same theme of patriotism, Ferguson delivers a stirring speech about what it means to be an American according to him. In the speech, Ferguson hits a number of strong points about the freedoms that he loves now that he is a citizen and the gratitude he feels for them. This is ironically one of the best pieces that Ferguson delivers on this release. Ironic first for the non-comedy piece to be featured as one of the best and more ironic that a Scottish man successfully delivers one of the best speeches on patriotism that I have seen in a very long time.
Overall
While his crass and profanity laden performance may not suit everyone, Ferguson puts on an incredibly entertaining show filled with not so dry sarcasm and surprising physical outbursts. The jokes fly fast but fans who aren’t afraid to laugh at the dark side are going to find a fun night in with ‘A Wee Bit of Revolution’.
