Britain: The Complete Collection
"Britain, Britain, Britain!" The funniest, most outrageous British sketch show since Monty Python comes to DVD in an 8 disc extravaganza of comedy gold. Little Britain is a frantic sketch comedy show with a dozen break out characters in situations that are truly gut-busting. The last time I fell in love like this with a comedy was with BBC's version of The Office. Little Britain had me rolling with laughter for hours, I can't remember when I laughed so hard and so long. No wonder this program swept the BAFTA awards (the British Emmys, so to speak). Most of the characters, both male and female, are played by Matt Lucas and David Williams, the duo who create and write the program. The nonsense talking slag Vickie, the Prime Minister with a lovesick gay assistant, the clueless travel agent ("Computer says noooo"), the phony 'cripple,' the only gay in the village, the woman with an uncontrolled bladder, the tactless weight loss counselor, the unconvincing transvestites - it's no exaggeration to say that every setup yields boffo laughs. There's no other word for it than brilliant, on every level. Even the announcer, Tom Baker of Dr. Who fame, is a hoot. Decidedly un-PC, the cheeky humor proves to be refreshing and thoroughly modern yet firmly rooted in the British style (cross dressing, lots of closeted gay characters, skewering sacred cows, that sort of thing). In this new DVD collection there are three seasons (called series in the U.K.) that consist of 8 episodes in the first series, 6 each in the 2 that followed plus several full-length specials (Little Britain Abroad and Little Britain Live) that center around the uproarious Little Britain tour that rocked Europe and Australia. The stage show is as funny as the TV series, not to be missed. In addition, there are loads of fascinating bonus features, numerous episode commentaries, deleted scenes, several behind-the-scenes documentaries, all encased in a colorful book-like package. Surprisingly, Little Britain series 3 ends with an episode that actually ties up the loose threads and brings closure to the characters. If you love comedy, especially humor in the British vein, you'll be delighted. Give Little Britain a spin. Number of discs: 8 TV on DVD Reviews: |
