Extras - The Complete Second Season

In the acclaimed HBO series Extras, Ricky Gervais stars as struggling working actor Andy Millman who can't seem to catch a break from the series of mishaps instigated by the incompetent, mendacious people he's surrounded by.

This show is Gervais' follow-up to one of my all time favorite comedies The Office - the original British version, not the lame American knockoff.

Season two plucks our protagonist Andy from the lowly extra roles to starring in a hit sitcom, one of those annoying catch phrase comedies that everyone hates but everyone watches. Now Andy has to deal with being a recognized celebrity, in a manner he despises, as a public buffoon.

The sitcom within a sitcom plot device is brilliant and leads this unstable bunch into fertile comedy fields. Year 2 is broader and more expansive than the first season and that was beyond awesome, even the intentionally lousy fake sitcom is hilarious. The setups are stunningly inappropriate, you'll squirm and gasp between the uproarious, uncontrollable laughter.

Extras works on every level. This is absolutely one of the funniest sitcoms of all time, funnier than The Office in many ways. It's more accessible thanks to the many superstars that appear in roles spoofing themselves, including David Bowie (in an especially funny episode), Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellen, Coldplay's Chris Martin, and a host of old-school British comics And wait until you see Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter himself) come on to Diana Rigg. Priceless.

Ricky Gervais is a true television genius, on a level with Jackie Gleason or Lucille Ball and his co-star and the show's co-creator Stephen Merchant provides his perfect foil. As a team they are as efficient and funny as Laurel & Hardy while Ashley Jensen as Andy's best friend Maggie Jacobs creates a comedy triumvirate.

Extras - The Complete Second Season contains numerous bonus features including blooper reels, and lots of behind the scenes footage and interviews with the main players and guest stars.
