Motown The DVD

Motown The DVD is a delirious stroll down memory lane, rocketing back to the mid-1960s and early-1970s when Motown ruled the airwaves with divas and titanic talents like The Supremes, Kim Weston, The Contours, Brenda Holliday, Jimmy Ruffin, The Marvelettes, Stevie Wonder, and so many more.

I don't normally like lip-synced performances but the quality of the music and the rarity of these recordings make this DVD irresistible. The canned music was a necessary evil back in the day, record companies wanted to preserve the illusion of a perfect performance that matched the records and there was often no room on the set for for bands to back up the groups.

Not ever performance is lip synced - there's a sizzling rare live version of Marvin Gaye's Ain't That Peculiar when the artist was at his peak. The way out fashions and groovy hairstyles that made these Motown performers icons are all on display - from the company's very first hit, Please Mr. Postman, to Smokey Robinson's 1972 smash Tears of a Clown.

And wait until you see Martha & the Vandellas performing 'Dancing in the Street' while riding down a Detroit assembly line - with a 1965 Mustang being assembled around them. Notice the bewildered look on the auto worker's faces - they were never told the girl group would be be bopping down the line that day. That clip is worth the price of the DVD alone!

Also included are snippets (why not the whole segments?) of interviews with Berry Gordy, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and the Pips and more from various local and national dance shows (remember those?) and afternoon talk programs. There are also films of a Motown picnic and news & advertisements from the era.
