Friday Night Lights - Season 2

Season one of Friday Night Lights garnered much acclaim but didn't do that well in the ratings for some reason. That was a shame given how remarkably compelling the series was, with many truly exciting football games wrapped around the drama. You actually would get caught up in the excitement of the games.

Season two regrettably descends into soap opera territory, Friday Night 90210. I no longer feel the authenticity. Everything about this season feels perfunctory, too much heightened tension and too little football.

There's the stupid murder case where Landry seems intent on going to prison by refusing to defend himself only to have the whole plotline dropped like a fumbled ball (shades of Jenna Wade on Dallas). Riggin's constant suffering, characters that hit rock bottom and then the heights in the span of one episode, the 20 second tornado, the dying wife ploy - was it network interference that dumbed this show down?

The game announcer, an effective device during the freshman year, is remarkably heavy handed, providing nothing but bare bones exposition.

Several of these young actors are in over their heads, I can barely tell the difference between Landry and Matt anymore and many of the female characters feel interchangeable. And what's with everyone talking over one another all the time? Very contrived.

On the other hand there are great actors like leads Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, in addition to Gaius Charles as Smash and Liz Mikel as Smash's mom, they carry much of the weight here. Brad Leland as Buddy Garrity and Taylor Kitsch as Tim Riggins are also excellent and engaging while Scott Porter is emotionally powerful as Jason Street.

I loved season one of Friday Night Lights so much even an inferior second year is better than something I have no investment in; there are some strong storylines buried in the suds. For season three they better pull off a rousing comeback or I won't be in the stands much longer.
