Quincy,
M.E.
Before CSI there was Quincy, ME, (the M.E. stands for Medical Examiner)
part of a rotating wheel of shows (the NBC Mystery Movies) that
included McCloud and McMillan and Wife (Universal released
all of those series in 2005).
Universal
Studios had so many shows on the air in the mid-seventies they had a factory
going; thankfully, that meant a lot of location shooting to save money.
Jack Klugman's
crusty delivery saves this effort, basically a derivative of Columbo,
with the crime shown at the beginning with the detective (in this case,
LA County coroner Quincy) solving the 'perfect' crime.
There's a sameness to these 1970's Universal productions (for instance,
the main titles and credits on all the shows look virtually the same)
but that can be a virtue as well.
Three discs
deliver the initial four episodes of the 1976 season along with the thirteen
second year shows (the series ran until 1983). Guest stars seen here include
the great Buddy Hackett in a two part storyline shot in Lake Tahoe.
It's enjoyable
TV watching although it pales next to the early seasons of Columbo,
Quincy has a charm all its own thanks to Klugman's everyman, gruff
persona. To date, this is the only DVD release for Quincy, ME.
