Impossible - The Third TV Season Mission Impossible debuted in 1966 but bucked the trend of painting the characters and situations with a broad comical brush as you would see on Batman, Man From U.N.C.L.E. or Wild, Wild West. This was a suspenseful and fairly realistic espionage drama played straight which is why Mission Impossible became one of the most popular TV programs in history. The IMF team didn't use torture to extract information out of enemy agents they set up elaborate stings instead, using every machination at their disposal including elaborate disguises, exquisitely timed fake outs, and (for that time) far-out high tech surveillance equipment. From the product description: The head of the "Impossible Missions Force", a top-secret government group of operatives, starts a tape recorder and finds out about his latest assignment. Throughout most of the series, they would have to stop some petty dictator or powerful bad guy from whatever evil plot they had against the U.S. or Democracy in general. The elaborate use of electronic gadgetry, masters of disguise and detailed plans that require split-second timing made this tv show an "on the edge of your seater" The picture and sound clarity on the DVD collection is astonishingly good. Sound is particularly important to Mission Impossible, the seminal music of Lalo Schifrin serves as a melodic undertone that heightens the tension, as integral a part of the overall production as the cast members or script. The show's key writer left in the middle of this season which allowed the production to move in fresh new directions and the series was ultimately made better for it. As such, season 3 is considered by fans to be the best year of all, the last with Barbra Bain and Martin Landau (Leonard Nimoy replaced them during the next two seasons), they were central to the show and two damn fine actors. Some believe the series never recovered from their departure but the show ran for another 4 years, a testament to the quality of the scripts and the durability of the concept. Mission Impossible has lost none of its appeal 40 years after the debut - this new set is a hot seller, #1 in Classic TV on DVD as I write this. Highly Recommended! Plot Outline: An elite covert operations unit carries out highly sensitive missions subject to official denial in the event of failure, death or capture. Plot Synopsis: Jim Phelps is the head of a super-secret government agency ("Impossible Missions"), and is often given secret anonymous covert missions to attempt; quite often they are unmasking of criminals or the rescuing of hostages. He picks his team depending on which tasks need to be done. One thing is vital on an Impossible Mission: the mission must be carried out in entire secrecy, often relying on high-tech equipment and elaborate deceptions. Studio: Paramount Home Video
